Nashville Symphony | Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor | Garrick Ohlsson, piano
PROGRAM
Adolphus Hailstork – An American Port of Call
Barber – Piano Concerto
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5
Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero and your Nashville Symphony open a spectacular new season with Tchaikovsky's bold and brilliant Symphony No. 5. Emerging from the composer's struggles with self-doubt, this landmark work is a vivid study in contrasts, with moments of brooding and poignancy, before building to a triumphant finish. A master of both technique and feeling, pianist Garrick Ohlsson takes the spotlight on Barber's Piano Concerto, a tour-de-force that is both fiendishly challenging and abundantly musical. Adolphus Hailstork's An American Port of Call sets the stage for the evening with a loving musical tribute to Norfolk, Virginia, where the composer resides.
