Wilbur Lin

Known for his thoughtful programming, compelling storytelling, and audience engagement, Taiwanese-American conductor Wilbur Lin’s career has taken him across the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Taiwan.

His recent and upcoming appearances include concerts with the St. Louis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Billings Symphony, Symphony Nova Scotia, and Dayton Philharmonic, in addition to his frequent return invitations from the Taipei Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, and Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Lin conducted over 70 concerts during his tenure as the associate conductor of the Colorado Symphony, and recently made his first guest appearance with the Cincinnati Pops following his time as the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony. He is currently the music director of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra.

An equally strong advocate for new music and neglected composers of the past, especially American and British women composers, Lin is closely associated with the research and performance of works by Alice Mary Smith and Amy Beach. Lin served as the music director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra while in Denver, with whom he released a recording of Marion Bauer’s “American Youth” Piano Concerto and a premiere recording of Alice Mary Smith’s The Masque of Pandora Overture.

Additional activities include his creation of a multimedia education concert series with Taipei Symphony, a studio recording with Eric Zuber and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and his curated presentation of Joe Hisaishi’s concert suites.

A graduate of Riccardo Muti's Italian Opera Academy, Lin’s operatic endeavors include conducting Verdi’s Macbeth at Teatro Alighieri, Le nozze di Figaro and L’elisir d’amore with the Missouri Symphony, and additional credits of Die Zauberflöte, Barber of Seville, and Menotti’s The Medium and Amelia Goes to the Ball. Lin has played and coached for companies including the Indianapolis Opera and Cincinnati Ballet. In 2022, Lin led a new workshop of Robeson by Scott Davenport Richards at the Cincinnati Opera.

Educated in Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Lin holds degrees from Indiana University, Royal Northern College of Music, and National Taiwan Normal University where his mentors included David Effron, Arthur Fagen, Clark Rundell, Mark Heron, and Apo Hsu. He has also received conducting coaching with, among others, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Riccardo Muti, Sir Mark Elder, and Helmuth Rilling.

Lin resides with his wife in New York City, is an avid runner, and flies just enough to justify maintaining his private pilot certificate.
