Giancarlo Guerrero appointed Principal Guest Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency

March 02, 2011

Giancarlo Guerrero has been appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency. He will continue to serve as Music Director of the Nashville Symphony while also serving in this three-year appointment, which begins in the 2011/12 season.

"We are incredibly pleased for Giancarlo," says Nashville Symphony President and CEO Alan D. Valentine. "This appointment reflects very positively on the Nashville Symphony, because it underscores the very high artistic standards that he has brought to our own orchestra. He is one of the most gifted and committed musicians with whom I have ever had the pleasure of working, and I am confident he will bring the same passion and extraordinary musicianship to this appointment that he brings to all of his work — whether at home with the Nashville Symphony, or abroad in his busy guest-conducting schedule."

As Principal Guest Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency, Guerrero will guide artistic planning for the Residency, program and conduct subscription concerts and special events, participate in collaborations with Miami partners and institutions, and guide the work of the Residency’s Education and Engagement programs.

Cleveland Orchestra Executive Director Gary Hanson says, "Giancarlo Guerrero is a visionary artistic leader who shares our passion for music and music education. His commitment to the Orchestra and to the Residency will help us achieve our goals of artistic excellence and meaningful community engagement."

Giancarlo Guerrero made his Cleveland Orchestra debut in May 2006 and has a five-year conducting relationship with the ensemble. In July 2008, he led The Cleveland Orchestra in a free, outdoor, community concert in downtown Cleveland attended by more than 80,000 people. Additionally, he has conducted at Blossom Music Center, the summer home of The Cleveland Orchestra, in 2008 and 2009.

Middle Tennessee audiences will have an opportunity to hear Guerrero conduct The Cleveland Orchestra next season when the ensemble performs at Schermerhorn Symphony Center on March 19, 2012.

ABOUT THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA & ITS MIAMI RESIDENCY

Founded in 1918, The Cleveland Orchestra was ranked by Gramophone Magazine (2008) in the Top Ten Orchestras in the World. The Orchestra has a long tradition of international acclaim that is continuing with high demand for its concerts under its current music director, Franz Welser-Möst. In concerts at home at Cleveland's Severance Hall, during its Blossom Festival season each summer, and on tour and in Miami, The Cleveland Orchestra continues to set standards of performing excellence and imaginative programming that serve as models for audiences and performers alike.

The orchestra launched its landmark Miami Residency project in January 2007 in the new Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Central to this achievement was the creation of the Musical Arts Association of Miami (MAAM) to support the Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency, with a goal of fostering a culture of passionate and dedicated concert-going among the broadest constituency.
