Drew and Ellie Holcomb are a husband and wife Americana duo from Nashville, TN. Shortly after their marriage in 2006, the couple began touring together with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. The band has supported many national touring acts including The Avett Brothers, Don Henley, Darius Rucker and Willie Nelson.

Ellie is no longer a touring member of “The Neighbors,” and has found success in a solo career as a Christian singer/songwriter as a 3x Dove Award winner as well as a best selling author.

Drew Holcomb still tours nationally with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors and their most recent album, Strangers No More, is their most critically acclaimed release yet notching a #1 Americana single, “Find Your People.”

Giancarlo Guerrero explores the range of emotions of art borne from grief. After visiting a friend’s posthumous art exhibit, Mussorgsky exclaimed “Ideas, melodies, come to me of their own accord.” He penned Pictures at an Exhibition with a feverish intensity, and the result is a work that showcases the virtuosity found within the orchestra. Sasha Cooke joins us for One Sweet Morning, John Corigliano’s achingly beautiful song cycle written to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

Associate Conductor Nathan Aspinall conducts our annual concert shining the spotlight on an up-and-coming pianist. The phenomenally gifted Janice Carissa takes the stage for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 — premiered in 1784 by one of Mozart’s rising star students. Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour, inspired by poetry, makes full use of the spectrum of colors in the orchestra. And Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 was penned at the height of WWII as “a hymn to free and happy Man…his pure and noble spirit.”

Lunar New Year is the most broadly observed holiday in Asian culture, and the Nashville Symphony’s inaugural Lunar New Year program will reflect how different communities and ethnic groups celebrate the occasion.  Nashville Symphony Associate Conductor Nathan Aspinall will conduct the concert which marks the Year of the Dragon and features arrangements of traditional melodies and original music from Chinese composers He Zhanhou, Chen Gang, and Li Huanzhi; Singaporean composers Phoon Yew Tien and Kelly Tang; and Vietnamese-American composer Viet Cuong.  Erhu virtuoso Ma Xiaohui, who performed with Yo-Yo Ma on the award-winning soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will be the featured soloist, performing excerpts from He Zhanhao and Chen Gang’s The Butterfly Lovers Concerto and the traditional melody “Horse Racing.” In addition, Jen-Jen Lin, Director/Artistic Director of the Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville, will create original choreography for Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture.  The concert culminates with Igor Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird, a classic symphonic concert work nodding to the Year of the Dragon by evoking a mythical, winged creature.   

In addition to the concert, the public spaces in the Schermerhorn will be filled with festive music, activities, and displays, including an Asian market curated by Asian & Pacific Islanders Middle Tennessee (API), craft tables for families including a lantern-making station, and booths with demonstrations of traditional calligraphy and other art forms.

Hailed by NPR as “one of the most brilliant artists of her generation,” Jennifer Koh joins Giancarlo Guerrero for Barber’s exquisite Violin Concerto. Tania León’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Stride, reflecting her Cuban American heritage, was part of a project celebrating the 19th Amendment. Anchoring the program is a repertoire staple, the Enigma Variations, a musical portrait gallery of the composer’s friends with an autobiographical look at himself.

For 60 years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has sung powerful, uplifting songs that emote the struggles and passion of South Africa. Nelson Mandela called Ladysmith “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors.” The group sings a cappella in a joyously energetic performance that combines loud powerful choruses with softer, almost whispering chants where voices blend harmoniously alongside tightly choreographed dance moves.

Since they shot to global stardom on Paul Simon's Graceland, Ladysmith Black Mambazo hasbeen recognized as one of the world's great vocal groups. In addition to their work Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes with Paul Simon, Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists from around the world, including Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris, Melissa Etheridge, and many others. Their film work includes a featured appearance in Michael Jackson’s "Moonwalker" video and Spike Lee’s Do It A Cappella. They've provided soundtrack material for Disney’s The Lion King, Part II as well as Eddie Murphy’s Coming To America, Marlon Brando’s A Dry White Season, Sean Connery’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, James Earl Jones’s Cry The Beloved Country, and Clint Eastwood's Invictus. A film documentary titled On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom, the Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo was nominated for an Academy Award. They have appeared on Broadway, have been nominated for Tony Awards, and have won a Drama Desk Award.

It's hard to think of anyone more universally beloved than Yo-Yo Ma, both for his passion and virtuosity, but also for his heartfelt humanity. It's been a few years, and we're thrilled to have Yo-Yo return to the stage of the Schermerhorn for a special one-night-only performance with the Nashville Symphony.

Each season, we showcase the Schermerhorn’s world-renowned pipe organ in a symphonic concert. Enter the versatile Wayne Marshall, leading from the console as soloist in the Poulenc Organ Concerto and from the piano for Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody. On the podium, he conducts Harlem and the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, by American icons whose mixing of jazz and classical idioms captured the spirit of 1950s and 1960s New York City.

Zuill Bailey, a longtime friend of the Nashville Symphony, flawlessly navigates the virtuosic pyrotechnics of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 — specifically chosen for this concert by Giancarlo Guerrero. Two of Beethoven’s even-numbered symphonies surround the concerto, and though they are less-often performed in concert, they remain two of his most poignant and profound works.

Gershwin’s orchestral music defined the American sound, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins us for our centennial celebration of Rhapsody in Blue plus his Piano Concerto in F. Gershwin is complemented by Florence Price and William Dawson, whose compositions stemmed from the Black American Experience. At its 1934 Carnegie Hall premiere, Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, based on spirituals and emphatically symphonic, brought audiences to their feet. And Price’s Dances in the Canebrakes is drawn from Black folk songs and dances of the 1920s and ‘30s.

Gustav Mahler, arr. Cooke: Symphony No. 10

Though the venerable composer Gustav Mahler completed only sketches of his Symphony No. 10 before his death in 1911, composers and musicologists spent much of the 20th century reconstructing it and filling in the gaps. Giancarlo Guerrero enlightens us with a fascinating exploration of this process before conducting Mahler’s final opus, considered by many to have been his greatest symphonic work.

We end our season with Orff’s Carmina burana, in all its magnificent, carnal beauty. Giancarlo Guerrero programmed it — in its original form — to showcase the powerful forces of the Nashville Symphony and Chorus. On the first half of the program, our soloists in the Orff treat us to Alban Berg’s Seven Early Songs and the autobiographical Songs of the Wayfarer of Mahler, who compared his own life to “a traveling journeyman…wandering on in solitude.”
