Friday
June 29, 2007, 7:30 p.m.- Laura Turner Concert Hall

Saturday
June 30, 2007, 7:30 p.m.- Laura Turner Concert Hall

Leonard Slatkin, conductor
Jeffery Siegel, piano
Barry Scott, narrator

Bernstein -  Candide Overture
Barber -  Adagio for Strings
Gershwin -  Rhapsody in Blue
Paul Turok -  Variations on an American Song, op. 20 (Aspects of Lincoln and Liberty)
Gould -  A Lincoln Legend
Copland -  Lincoln Portrait

If American classical music had a Top 40 ranking of most popular works, then these four, conducted here by our Music Advisor Leonard Slatkin, would appear at the top. Bernstein's zesty Candide Overture kicks off a program that then turns pensive with Samuel Barber’s deeply emotional Adagio for Strings. George Gershwin’s snazzy, stylish Rhapsody in Blue gives way to Aaron Copland’s tribute to Lincoln using the president’s own immortal words.
